The history of Buick really begins on September 17th, 1854, with the birth of a young Scottish boy named David Buick. The young Buick would not stay in Scotland long, however, as he was brought to the United States at the young age of 2. Buick grew up to be a plumbing inventor based in Detroit. As he continued honing his invention skills, he moved with the tide of the time and began working on gasoline engines, a career path about which he became passionate.
In 1903, the Buick company was officially incorporated. Buick faced initial difficulty and almost went bankrupt just one year after its incorporation in 1904. Refusing to quit, however, the company stayed determined. This determination was not unfounded, as Buick’s products far surpassed anything else on the market at the time and quickly caught the attention of customers and auto experts alike. Having been declared the number 1 automobile producer in 1908, Buick was moved around the state of Michigan quite a bit, first from Detroit to Flint, then from Flint to Jackson. Buick attracted the attention of many higher-ups in the automotive industry, including William “Billy” Durant, who founded a little company known as General Motors.
What often goes unknown is that GM was founded with Buick as its pillar; it was the initial success of Buick upon which Durant built this now-iconic company. During a short hiatus from general motors for a period during 1908-1910, Buick co-founded Chevrolet with the brand’s namesake Louis Chevrolet, and it was this company’s success that brought him back into the fold of GM. Throughout the 1920s Buick really began to boom and grow in popularity, not only here in the United States but internationally. Its performance was proven time and time again, and people were drawn to these new Buick vehicles. Some things are consistent throughout all of history.
Though the brand saw grim times during the Great Depression, it quickly bounced back as a leader. Unfortunately, as we know, the nation would see grimness worse than this, with World War II just around the corner. After the war, however, Buick saw booming success, thanks to its stylish and innovative designs, led by designer Ned Nickles and Edward T. Ragsdale. Of course, this excellence in the design department has only gotten better over the years. After a brief drop in the 1950s, Buick saw even greater success in the 1960s.
Buick continued to tackle obstacles as they came, always emerging as a leading brand, and in 1986, new general manager Edward Metz began to shape the company into what it is today: a premium brand for high-performing and reliable luxury vehicles. Throughout the '90s and 2000s, the brand has progressed immensely and truly has grown into Metz’s vision. The fruit, which we see today, is undeniably excellent.
