Because staying off of the roads throughout the entire winter is just not feasible for many drivers, our Minot service center is here to provide some tips on how to navigate snowy roads as safely as possible.

How to Drive Safely in the Snow

Drive Smoothly

By being as smooth as possible with the steering wheel, accelerator and brakes, you can avoid unsticking to the lack of grip of a slippery road. Emphasize deliberate, gentle and gradual movements whenever you need to drive in snowy conditions.

Take It Slow

Slow down on turns and double the amount of stopping distance you would normally take when the road is wet, triple on snow and even more so on icy roads.

Pay Attention to Lights/Warnings

If you see a small, amber light flashing in the instrument cluster, this warning is the stability-control system letting you know the car’s wheels are slipping. Ease up on the accelerator so the tires can regain their grip.

Don’t Panic in a Skid

When you hit a slippery spot in the road, you may start to skid. It’s incredibly important not to panic and NOT to slam the brakes. If your front wheels skid, ease off the gas and the tires should regain traction shortly. For a rear-wheel skid, you may start to feel yourself spin out – turn the steering wheel in the same direction that the rear of the car is sliding.

Use Winter Tires

If possible, consider installing winter tires on your car. Our Minot service center can help you with installations and other tire services to maximize your safety on winter roads today.
